Go Cowboys!
i'm new to the board, just signed up today.. i grew up going to garland, mesquite and white rock/lake highlands congregations.
stopped associating with the jw's in the early 90's.
i'd like to meet up with some people who attended in the same areas and catch up on old times, i.e.
Thanks to everyone who posted and made me feel so welcome on here today.
See you in the threads!

i don't know if it is me or if it is becauce i was taught so much false teachings growing up, or maybe that the watch tower publications are about a 10th grade level and when i read a thoughtful article i want to believe it.
but boy, television media seems to present the public with truths the same way the watchtower presents its truth.
with 10 minute sound bites, never getting to deep and really not explaining very well the history of some of the subjects.just a thought!
I think you are on to something here. I've never given it any thought, but most JW's I have know do tend to be interested in conspiracy theories. I've always been intriqued by them myself.
I know I grew up thinking that I knew the *secrets*, (the Truth), about reality. I was taught by my parents and the organization that Satan was the motivating force inside the culture, including all the governments, the educational institutions, the arts, basically everything outside of the organization.
"The Truth" is really just the all-time, great unifying conspiracy theory: The conspiracy theory that explains all other conspiracy theories.
ok, so i have been thinking about my time as a jw (i'm fading out - read my other posts for background info).
you know how you always hear how the ministry will bring so much joy and contentment, yadda yadda yadda?
i always hated service...always!!
I only saw the fake joy that went along with all the fake plants.
I can still spot that failed smile on people's faces today when they try to pass it off on me.
I understand where the joy fraud comes from. You have to have it, because if you don't express it, then you are spiritually weak. There really isn't any time for sadness with the end so near!
It's really unfortunate that, when people can't be authentic and really lean on each other, and they bottle pain up inside all their lives, they can come to some sad ends. I know of several stories of people who grew old, having devoted their entire lives to the organization, and ended up passing from this life alone and very despondent.
JW's always point to the fact that they are supportive of other JW's in need, but from what I saw, once the covered dishes were returned to their owners, everyone pretty much lead solitary lives again. At least emotionally.

I'll be 40 here in a few days. I'm familiar with the Thomans. I think she is a few years younger than me. My congregation was Southgate in Garland but I went to White Rock to see my friends. I was good friends with Paula's younger brothers. Kelly's little sister, Sharon, was my first girlfriend.
I guess Paul and Wanda were just two people in the same place at the same time, both losing their spouses. They were, as couples, very close. I hope they are all still doing well.
I stopped going completely in the early 90's. Intellectually, I was able to distance myself from the dogma while in college, but emotionally, I still have to be aware that my upbringing effects my thinking in terms of trust issues, black and white thinking, etc.

Chris, Presly does sound familiar. The group of kids I hung out with would have been at White Rock at that time (Alexanders, Beebes).

All the best to everyone.
